Today, in honor of Cheryl's birthday (yesterday), we went hiking at Max Patch, a 400 acre clearing at the top of a 4600 ft mountain to the west of us near the Tennessee border. The area was cleared by settlers for livestock grazing in the 1800s, but is now maintained as a park by the U.S. Forest Service. The peak provides a clear 360-degree view of mountains on all sides.

There are also many wild Mountain Laurels in bloom there...
and lots of Flame Azaleas too.
