Everyone in the area is invited to participate and lines up on a gravel road to parade along a short stretch of the Reems Creek road east of where we live, and around the corner to the community center.
There were probably as many people in the parade as watching. There were a few old cars, a business or two, and one church along with the expected bicycles, ATVs, horses, and dogs. But we had never seen goats in a parade before.
This pygmy goat was just out of view in the above photo, but was dressed so handsomely we took his picture after the parade was over. He helped himself to some of the candy being tossed at the crowds.
The Reems Creek Fire Department was there in all its finery. The fire trucks made up probably half the parade.
MAMA (Mountain Area Medical Airlift) showed up and landed in the baseball field just as the parade was ending.
We attended the Patriotic Program that took place following the parade and included the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, a young girl reciting a poem, special musical performances (although none of them bluegrass), and a guest speaker who titled his presentation "Things I Learned from Watching the South End of a Northbound Mule." The fire chief spoke, but only because his mother was honored with the presentation of a wildflower bouquet. There was a retrospective slide show to honor the 125th anniversary celebration. Cheryl took pictures in the hall during some of the program that didn't come out, but this one shows us gathering for the program.
MAMA took off just before lunch, as did we.
