new garden visitor

Norris and Cheryl took a trip to Wytheville VA to meet up with Dorry for a quilt exchange. Upon coming home and relaxing on the porch, we were surprised to have a new visitor at the feeder. So were the goldfinches, who perched warily in the trees while this newcomer helped himself to all the seed under the feeder. Eventually one of them swooped down near the turkey's head. When the big guy ducked, they all decided it was ok, the buffet line was open again. We think we have more than the original goldfinches 10-12 now. We don't know why the larger birds aren't interested.



Sorry his face is behind the birdbath, but your photographer was trying not to scare everyone away and just snapped. This picture was chosen as it shows several of the goldfinches with the turkey.

This next picture is for Dorry. It was taken yesterday evening from our deck and shows, not too well in the shadows, the two rhubarb plants we planted shortly after her spring visit. She gave the one on the right to Norris. It is a different variety than the one we had bought but at that time, they were nearly the same size. Earlier this summer we were worried about both of them, but clearly, the plant on the right has just decided to put out lots of beautiful new leaves in preparation for a harvest next year. (the other one is still pretty close to the same size it was when we planted it.)
