Success with birds

We had a sunflower seed feeder out since February and never had any luck attracting birds. In the spring, we added a small birdbath, and the trees leafed out giving the feeder better cover from the hawks. Perhaps three goldfinches showed up for a few weeks but then disappeared.

Norris moved the feeder and birdbath to the area off the back corner of the screened porch. On Monday this week, he bought brand new seed and a new feeder without the "squirrel proof" cage. We have squirrels, but we have yet to see one anywhere near the feeder, nor did they ever pick up any of the peanuts placed out for them.

The goldfinches showed up yesterday. Today, Cheryl noted every time she looked out, there would be one out there. We're having lovely weather in WNC today, so we sat on the porch to watch. When we saw as many as ten at a time, we got the camera out. The late afternoon sunlight was not the best, but Norris captured eight goldfinches in the photo above - including the one on the right, actually in flight, but momentarily with wings down so he does not appear look to be flying.
